Victorian Carved Whitby Jet & 9ct Gold, Torpedo Drop Earrings

Fabulous large Victorian hand carved Whitby Jet torpedo drop earrings c1860s

Whitby jet is in fact fossilised wood -a surprisingly light weight material - collected even to this day in and around the coastline of the beautiful seaside town of Whitby (in North Yorkshire) - a hard and strong material that can be fashioned into beautiful items of jewellery -0f course popularised by Queen Victoria in her mourning period after the death of her Husband, Prince Albert in 1861

The earrings are big and beautiful and intricately hand carved- they look stunning when worn at over 6cm in length, on post and butterfly fittings which will have been converted at some point in their history

The large teardrop sections are set in 9ct gold mounts connected above to the round carved Whitby jet section that sits on the earlobe, they are fully articulated creating a pendulous movement in the ears

Stamped 9ct to the top of the torpedo mounts (and tested)

Dimensions: 62mm long, The top round jet section is 11mm round, the torpedo drop is 46.5mm long

Condition: Very good condition. The Whitby jet is in very good condition apart from a small chipped section at the bottom that is only seen when magnified and can't be seen when worn. There is a historic repair to the back of the top section of one of the earrings where there is a little gap that has been soft soldered but this can't be seen when worn and the repair is good and strong
