Victorian, Scottish, Leopard Skin Agate & Malachite Brooch
A very striking and unusual, Victorian Silver Scottish pebble brooch, set with Malachite and Leopard Jasper c1860s
The polished stones are set within an oval Silver frame, in a geometric chequerboard design, the leopard Jasper does really look just like leopard spots in this brooch and the green of the malachite contrasts so well.
It is so unusual and very striking on the lapel!
The brooch is such a lovely tactile piece too with its silky smooth surface with a mellowed patina
The brooch closes securely with a simple c clasp and a lovely straight pin!
Scottish agate / pebble jewellery became very popular in the mid to late 1800s. Prince Albert and Queen Victoria purchased Balmoral Castle in Scotland in 1852, Queen Victoria brought back souvenirs from her stay and of course what Queen Victoria did many others would follow and agate brooches and other Scottish agate jewellery became all the rage!
