Victorian, Scottish, Montrose Agate, Sterling Silver brooch
Victorian, Scottish, Montrose Agate, Sterling Silver brooch
Scottish agate / pebble jewellery became very popular in the mid 1800s. Prince Albert and Queen Victorian purchased Balmoral Castle in Scotland in 1852, Queen Victoria brought back souvenirs from her stay and of course what Queen Victoria did many others would follow and agate brooches and other jewellery became all the rage!
This quality antique Agate brooch is big and beautiful and in super condition . A donut like design of hollow form, convex to the front and rear, set throughout with Montrose Agate, skillfully inlaid within hand engraved Sterling Silver.
This brooch is so very wearable and has a contemporary look to it. It's lovely and chunky and very tactile. The Agate remains shiny, in various hues of blue, grey against a backdrop of aged Silver, subtly magnificent!
The brooch closes with a pin and c catch that works perfectly
